Lapidairy~Yellow Agate
By Katharine Clark, Illustrated by Robin Ator

Hello, everybody! Bo Ruadh here, on the edge of equal night and day--just like you! We Irish like the notion of betwixt and between; this is the place where magic happens. (I know my sister sacred cows have mentioned this in the past!)

Take where I am, for example. Now that the river is running slower, and the level is lower, I like to stand on the wet pebbles that usually mark the place where the land meets the water. This is a “betwixt and between” place. These small pebbles remind me of an autumnal stone, the color of ripe wheat--a common gem, easily located: the yellow agate.

Harvest is not the time to slow down or weaken, not with crops in the field needing reaping, and school starting in the northern hemisphere. Yep, it seems that as we're ready to harvest the physical earth, it's time to grow some educational seeds in our own “mind” fields!

Yellow agate also strengthens the heart, brings courage, raises your self esteem and brings your energies into alignment. With THAT going for you, working the land, or the text books, becomes a lot easier.

Beyond that, this gem also gives a boost to your body and your vision. It can bring you balance, inside and out--mental, physical, spiritual and emotional. When you're balanced, you can be grounded more effectively. If you are grounded, you can pull stamina from the Earth. If you have stamina, you can complete the work at hand. See? This magical stone brings you into the circuit of giving and receiving energy!

Yellow agate has been called “the farmer's friend” because it assists in the selection, growing and harvesting of plants. On the other hand, it aids intelligence, and helps you make--and keep--friends. That's a perfect combination when starting a new school year.

When it comes particularly to children, yellow agate removes fear. It can also quicken a sluggish metabolism and bring good dreams.

Finally, yellow agate compels those around you to tell the truth. Imagine how useful that is for a farmer dealing with buyers for his produce. Also, think of all the annoying stories, rumors, and half-truths that circulate through schools and classrooms. Wouldn't it be refreshing if the things said to you reflected how people really felt and viewed the world?

Well, we don't want to manipulate others, and I don't want to promise results--so why not carry some yellow agate and see for yourselves? Even if others don't suddenly avoid tall tales, the yellow agate will help your stomach, lungs, throat and skin. Lethargy (constantly being tired) will fade away, and you'll be able to enjoy the colors and cool, crisp air of Autumn.

Honest!

Good health to you all, and a bountiful harvest. Till next time, this is Bo Ruadh moooving on!
